Hygiene isn't optional — it's a legal requirement and a trust signal for your clients. Here's what every barber shop in Ireland needs to have in place.
Tool Disinfection
- Scissors and combs — disinfect in Barbicide solution between every client. Keep a jar visible at your station — clients notice.
- Clippers and trimmers — spray with clipper disinfectant spray after every use. Remove the blade and brush out hair daily.
- Razors — use a fresh disposable blade for every client. No exceptions. Dispose in a sharps container.
Linen and Gowns
Fresh gown for every client. Have at least 4-5 per chair so you always have clean ones ready. Wash at 60°C minimum.
Neck strips prevent the gown from touching the client's skin directly — use one every time.
Your Station
- Wipe down your chair, mirror, and counter between clients
- Sweep hair from the floor after every cut
- Keep products in dispensers, not open containers
- Wash your hands before touching each client
What Inspectors Look For
Environmental Health Officers can inspect barber shops. They check for:
- Visible disinfection procedures
- Sharps disposal containers
- Clean towels and gowns
- Hand washing facilities
- General cleanliness
