Cutting Shears vs Thinning Shears

Thinning shears have teeth on one or both blades. They're used for blending, texturising, and removing weight without changing the overall shape. Micro-serrated teeth give the most even result.
What Size Do You Need?
Most barbers work with 6" or 6.5" cutting shears. Shorter blades (5" - 5.5") give more control for detail work around ears and necklines. Longer blades (7"+) are better for scissor-over-comb on the sides and back.
Japanese Steel vs German Steel
Japanese steel (like VG-10 or ATS-314) is harder, holds a sharper edge longer, and allows for a thinner, more precise blade. German steel is softer and more durable but needs sharpening more often. For professional barbers, Japanese steel is the industry standard.
