A good pair of scissors is an investment. With proper care, Japanese steel shears can last 5-10 years. Here's how to keep them performing at their best.
Daily Care
- Wipe after every client — use a soft cloth to remove hair and moisture from the blades.
- Oil the pivot point — one drop of scissor oil at the screw keeps the action smooth and prevents corrosion.
- Check the tension — hold the scissors with one handle, open to 90°, and let go. The blade should close about halfway. Adjust the tension screw if needed.
Weekly Care
- Deep clean — use a soft brush to remove any buildup around the pivot area.
- Inspect the edge — look for nicks or rough spots. If you feel any catching when cutting, it's time for sharpening.
What NOT to Do
- Never cut paper — it dulls the edge faster than hair.
- Don't drop them — even a short fall can misalign the blades or chip the edge.
- Avoid cutting over combs with hard teeth — metal combs can nick the blade.
- Don't lend them — other people won't treat them like you do.
Professional Sharpening
Get your scissors professionally sharpened every 6-12 months, depending on use. A good sharpener will also realign the blades and adjust the tension. Budget €20-30 per pair.
Storage
Always store scissors in their case when not in use. Never throw them loose in a drawer with other tools — the blades will get damaged.
