Work out which part of it you actually want
"I want a JRL" usually means one of three things, and they point at different replacements.
- Cordless with enough torque to fade through thick hair without bogging down. This is the real reason most barbers buy one. It is also the thing worth paying for.
- The taper lever and blade feel. Muscle memory. Any replacement has to have a lever you can move without looking.
- The look. Perfectly legitimate — your tools sit on the station in front of paying customers all day.
If it is the first, plenty of machines do it. If it is the third, nothing else will feel the same and you may as well wait for stock.
What to check before you swap brands
- Run time on a full charge, and how it behaves at the end of it. A clipper that fades fine for an hour and then drags is worse than one with a shorter honest run time.
- Blade availability in Ireland. A cheap machine with blades you cannot replace here is a false economy. Ask before you buy, not after.
- Weight and balance. You are holding it for eight hours. A heavier clipper that balances well beats a light one that does not.
- Noise. Underrated. It is the difference between a calm chair and a tense one, especially with kids.
